BankVic is proud to be the Principal Partner of the 2021 Dame Elisabeth Murdoch Nursing Development Scholarship (DEMNDS).
DEMNDS offers a unique career development opportunity for an outstanding nurse of The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH). The annual scholarship can be used to fund an appropriate study program or time spent abroad exploring practice. The recipient shares their knowledge and experience with RCH colleagues to enhance the delivery of nursing care to patients and families.
We support the scholarship as part of our commitment to the community and our long-standing focus on supporting our partners and their employees in developing skills and furthering careers.

Congratulations to Jenny O’Neil
We would like to congratulate Jenny O’Neil on being awarded this year’s scholarship. Jenny is a multidisciplinary and highly skilled Nurse Consultant in the Nurse Research Department and has been caring for sick children at the RCH since 2000.
With the support of the DEMNDS, Jenny will develop her leadership in clinical ethics and pilot a program that aims to empower nurses across the hospital through education in clinical ethics. Working in conjunction with the RCH Children’s Bioethics Centre (CBC) which provides support and advice to RCH staff for complex decision-making, Jenny aims to increase nurse participation in this process.
“Nurses face ethical dilemmas on a daily basis, with questions on the autonomy of children with disabilities, end of life care, families refusing medical advice and holding children for procedures.
“Nurses have a really unique position at the patients’ bedside in terms of advocating for the family and I want to optimise the nursing voice in difficult positions and discussions,” said Jenny.
Virtual Fundraiser – Monday 10 May
A virtual fundraiser via Zoom Webinar is taking place on Monday 10 May and will feature an interactive hypothetical discussion. Registration to attend the virtual fundraiser is free, however RCH is raising funds to support the continuation of this vital scholarship.
